The Bread

I’m wandering on the barren shore
between night and day
my knapsack is filled with pebbles
picked at random

I sit down on a taller hillock
gathering dry sand in my palms
washing my face for a long time
a drop of blood trembles under the eyelid

from my chest pocket
I take out a piece of old dough
untying my handkerchief full of salt
I roll it all over
and tear it to pieces
with a heavy heart

my lips have sores
whitened teeth are almost shaking
a higher sky burns my eyes
here comes the sun after the snowfall
like a reddish mirror

this winter birds are well fed
soon I’ll go home
step after step on the same road
sprinkled with crumbs
